Wahkiakum County Courthouse
"Wahkiakum County is 269 square miles and
was created by the Legislature in 1854. It was named
after an Indian Chief. There were barely enough
people to form a county government as an 1853 census
of the area found only 52 people, and 20 of these
were under 21 years of age. For the first tweny
years the county did not have a courthouse, and
was built at the cost of $540 and it provided only
jail space and a courtroom overhead. In 1895 a county
auditor's office was added and the first complete
courthouse was built in 1891. The county courthouse
pictured above was constructed in 1922 following
a fire in September 1921, destroying the previous
courthouse."
