Stevens County Courthouse

"The Stevens County Courthouse in Colville occupies a full city block one street from the center of the city. The fine appearing brick structure was built in 1938 and has beautifully lanscaped and maintained grounds. Stevens County was created in 1863 from parent Walla Walla County and was named after the first territorial governor, Isaac Stevens. At that time it comprised a huge area that included the present day counties of Whitman, Ferry, Okanogan and portion of Chelan County. Pickney City served as the first county seat, but in 1883 the territorial legislature made Colville the county seat. Agitation to move the county seat to Chewelah developed in 1892 and then Kettle Falls entered the race and won at the polls. However, the matter was contested in court and in 1894 the supreme court decided the whole election was a nullity because certain irregularities, and the seat of the county government remained in Colville. The county ranks 5th in size as it contains 2488 square miles.
