"Grant County, named for General U.S. Grant, is one of the younger counties of the state having been created by the 1909 legislature through a division of Douglas County. The 1909 act stipulates that Ephrata should be the county seat, and it has ever since remained the headquarters of the Grant County government. The first temporary courthouse was constructed in 1909 at a cost of only $4,975 and was used until the present beautiful structure was built in 1917. The 1909 building still stands on the original site, and is now the Community Methodist Church. The rapid population growth of the county with more than tripling occurring between 1940 and 1960 required added space for county government. In 1955 a three story annex was attached to the back of the courthouse building. The annex which cost more than $400,000.00 actually provides more floor space than the pictured original structure."
