Columbia County Courthouse
"The oldest courthouse in the State of Washington
is that of Columbia County in Dayton. The construction
contract for the building was awarded in 1886 at
a price of $32,732.00. A. J. Dexter received $10,745
for the stone, brick and concrete work while Kribs,
Bishop and Arnold were paid $21,987 for the carpentry
and other work. The building has been well maintained
for its years, and a downward population trend in
the agriculture county has made it possible to continue
to house the county offices in the old building.
The cannon in front of the courthouse is of Civil
War vintage. The county was created in 1875 and
named after the Columbia River. Walla Walla was
the parent county, and originally Columbia County
included the present area of Asotin and Garfield
counties as well. However, in 1881 Garfield County
was created, and then it was divided in 1883 to
form Asotin county."
